Heyo. Zed here. I’m going to do a series of three posts explaining how I built the large project you see here, Chateau D’Or in Survival mode. To clarify, the entire project was done in Survival mode without cheats, flying, or unlimited blocks. Here I’m going to explain how I did that step by step.
First is the shell. This is the outer part of the building including walls and the roof. In terms of walls and roof you want a set of blocks that look good with each other. The colours and textures need to add up to something that looks like a building and not a pile of sticks. This is a personal preference thing and there’s no right answer to it, but I recommend building smaller structures with a set of blocks before moving onto the larger and harder to make ones. Here we’re using stone for the walls and oak slabs for the roof.
The first step is to pick a spot for the building. Look for flat land about the size and shape of the building. I always structure my buildings in multiples of two. I like eight blocks long, six blocks deep and four blocks tall. For larger buildings just do multiples of those. They’re easy to count and look great when they’re done. Blocks are metres so these would probably look good in real life too.
Next is to lay the foundations. These are the outlines of where the main building and smaller sub buildings will be. I find it’s easier to make each part of a building a different height in multiples of four, normally one or two stories but going up to ten. This is the foundation for the castle here.
Then it’s the walls. These don’t actually take that much work so long as you’ve got the materials on hand. Just a reminder this is Survival mode we’re in here so I had to strip mine half a mountain to get the stone and coal for this one. In Survival you can get stone by smelting cobblestone with coal.
Add in the dirt staircase along the side and then go jump on top of one of the foundation’s corners. Place two blocks under you and lay them in stacks of two on top of the foundation. Just walk the perimeter of the building and you’ll have a three-high wall.
Repeat adding dirt stairs and blocks for the walls in multiples of two from on top of the wall blocks. In Creative mode you can place blocks three down in front of you so buildings go a bit faster but not much.
When you’re done with that lay the perimeter of the roof on the tops of the walls.
Add in the roof in bands so you can keep everything in reach.
And then add in the windows and floors. I haven’t decorated the inside yet. I’ll leave that for another day.
