Starter Set Spotlight - Food Gems Part Two

Hello. C J here. I’ve got some new art for everyone today. I’m one step closer to having the Starter Set done. We have a hand drawn digital chalk bag of coffee grounds and a jug of milk. I’ve got four more food ingredient images left and then I’ll draw the final food items like cheese pizza and wedge fries. I already have latte done and I’m posting it here as well. Speaking of food, I’m doing the planning today and tomorrow for working on some of the barbecue themed recipes I want to try out this upcoming weekend.

I have a barbecue sauce that I think I’ve already posted here. I want an easy, smaller portion size pork rib roast first. I thought that if I take a pork chop and slice it into strips, cover it in barbecue sauce and thrn bake it with tinfoil on top then I might get the juicy tenderness of a good rib roast. I hope to have the first batch of these done this weekend. I already have everything on hand I need for them. Look at the post Plans for Food of the World for the full list of recipes I want for the card game after the Starter Set.

And I’ve got an extra piece of news. Good news. I’m making a second setting. The Legend Setting will always no matter what be my number one priority but I know that now that I have all the core rules for the Legend Setting done I have the time to work on something for fun. This new setting will be radically different but will also feature my core company values. Characters will have realistic genders, know how to consent to intimacy, never discriminate, pursue knowledge and work together especially when paid to do so.

Welcome then to my new setting, Shattered Kingdoms. The narrative is as follows. Take a classic if technologically advanced fantasy setting composed of classic races like humans and fae. The gods are locked in a cosmic war between those of order and civilization and those of disorder and nature. The gods return to the mortal world, which in this case is a single planet, for the final battle of their great war.

In the process the outpouring of spiritual energy changes the nature of the world. The power of nature infuses all living things, granting them immortality but also animal characteristics and instincts. No one wins the war and so they delegate mortals to carry it on by proxy. Meanwhile the afterlife starts to blend into the mortal world and spirits and mortals learn to cross the bridge between them. The Last Battle happened over the course of a year and now it’s been five years for people to get used to their new forms and needs.

The theme of the work is Six Years Hence, and this might be the title of a novel when I’m ready to write one. We’re dealing with more generic fantasy just with anthropomorphic visuals. Sword fights still decide most disputes and magic is evolving now that its laws are settling down after the Last Battle. Most of it is now transformation magic where previously the same spells were for combat. The great nations of the land are no more and new ones are rising in their place, with new leaders and new rivalries.

The magic system is being worked on but I know that I need to make it similar to the one I already have that works already. I’m thinking of something similar to gem cards but with runes that follow a mechanical theme. Pay different combinations of rune cards to cast spells from your hand. I don’t know whether I want this to be a book line, a card game, or both so we’ll see. It’s being done for fun so I do not have any expectation of a timeline for it. And yes, it is really fun to work on. Shattered Kingdoms is not in the game galaxy as my main setting and they will never meet. Cool. The job got fun again.

Four New Recipes for January

Hello. C J here. I've got four new recipes for everyone here. We have everything from Chinese chicken to homemade hot apple cider. Enjoy. The Emperor’s Potatoes Here we have the first food item I ever finished designing for Food of the World – Carthia. I tried three combinations of traditional Asian ingredients and pasta under the assumption that I was doing Italian-Chinese food for the book. I could not for the life of me get any of them to be exciting. They were fine. I don’t eat fine. I got bored of the pasta thing and then thought to myself, ‘what happens if I swap the pasta for another starch? What about a potato?’ It worked. Really well. It worked so well I named them The Emperor’s Potatoes. They’re mashed potatoes and I left the skins on because I like vitamins and then that got me thinking about the traditional medicinal food of Ancient China, ginger. Could I put ginger in a potato dish and have it work? Yes. I can. That surprised me. Be warned, these are almost dangerousl...

Recipe - Lemon-Lime Soda

Hello. C J here. I have here a recipe for homemade lemon-lime soda. This beverage is just as sweet as the original brand it’s based on but has actual lemon juice and lime juice in it. It tastes similar but not as acidic. Strangely this recipe worked the first time I made it. It’s mostly glucose syrup, which any chemist with my knowledge of food could make in a home kitchen. The recipe makes four cups, each one to be served over ice. One cup is mostly enough for one person. Ingredients One Cup Sugar One Half Cup Water One Tablespoon Lemon Juice Three Tablespoons Lime Juice Two and a Half Cups Soda Water For the Glucose Syrup Mix the sugar and the water in a medium saucepan. Put over medium heat and stir frequently until the sugar is dissolved and the liquid is clear. It should still be thicker than water. For the Soda Measure out two and a half cups of soda water. Pour into this the glucose syrup in a heat proof one quart measuring cup or other heat proof vessel. Add the lemon juic...

Chocolate and Barbecue Sauce and Truffles Oh My

Hello. C J here. I've got two new recipes for everyone today. I meant to type up a third but for the life of me I can't find the paper index card I wrote it down on. I will have to make it again and post it later once I double check I have the right proportions. I know what's in it but the proportions are done by taste. It's for Asian style ginger baked beans as part of my Asian-barbecue book I'm working on. The book might actually end up being cards for the card game because the recipes are so simple they fit in that format. That makes my job easier. Here's our two recipes for today. The first is a new Asian style barbecue sauce I invented from scratch. This isn't based on an existing sauce. It's the product of a lot of planning and research. It's great. The second recipe is for my final draft scratch made dark chocolate. This stuff is good. I still have some of the batch I made three days ago on hand. It's too tasty to eat. There will be a mil...
